RMS Lusitania - "Take up the Sword of Justice" recruitment poster
MMM.1991.430.2
Information
This dramatic recruitment poster was first published a month after the sinking. It depicts the figure of Justice rising from the sea, offering a sword while the Lusitania sinks and the doomed passengers drown. This was intended to tap into the raw emotion and anger felt in Britain, and encourage people to avenge Lusitania by enlisting. The loss of Lusitania was used heavily in Britain, and later in America, for recruitment and support of the allied cause. It was acquired by the museum as part of Captain Dow’s archive.
