A Roadside Alehouse
LL 3557
Information
This work, which has been dated to 1790- 1792, has been described as unfinished. The size of the canvas and the care with which at least some of the figures have been laid in suggest that Morland may originally have intended it for exhibition. However, most of the design, including the inn itself, the sign announcing the toll gate, the trees, and much of the foreground, has been brushed in later in a much broader and more vigorous manner.
