Robert Braithwaite Martineau
WAG 2443
Information
Robert Martineau was a follower of the Pre-Raphaelites. His best known paintings are 'The Last Day in the Old Home' (Tate Gallery) and 'The Poor Actress's Christmas Dinner' (Ashmolean Museum, Oxford). Martineau was a pupil of Hunt's and for a time shared a studio with him.
This is one of a group of portrait drawings Hunt made of his artist friends.
Hunt gave this drawing and one of Edward Lear (WAG 1251) to the Walker in gratitude for the encouragement and prizes he had received from the Liverpool Academy in the 1850s.
