This is Astris, third stage of the Europa 2 rocket for launching satellites. It was part of the European Space Vehicle Launcher Development Organisation’s project, based in Paris. Made in Germany in 1968 by Entwicklungsring Nord, part of Arbeitsgemeneinschaft Satellitenträger; this rocket part has never been fired. The project failed because of European countries having different objectives, making difficulties in engineering and communication. Britain withdrew funding from the project in 1971 and the organisation was later replaced by the European Space Agency who produced the much more successful Ariane rocket. Astris is on display on the 5th floor Space Gallery of World Museum.
