Saints Peter and Paul with an Angel holding an Escutcheon

WAG 1995.210

Information

Recto: Sketch of three figures. The figure on the left [St Peter] has his right arm aloft. The figure on the right [St Paul] is holding what appears to be an open book with a sword laid upon it. Below them, a putto is holding an escutcheon or coat of arms. The figures are drawn in quick, bold and fluid pen strokes, with brown wash liberally used over the figures for a strong chiaroscuro effect. Verso: Male figure study on the left and a sketch of a foot in the lower right. Other limbs sketched on the rest of the page.
