WAG 2371

Information

Sappers are soldiers who work as engineers. Typical duties include building bridges, roads and airfields. Early in the Second World War Richards joined the Royal Engineers as a sapper. He worked in County Durham building defenses. When he was stationed in England he painted whenever he could, capturing army life. He sent his work to the War Artists Advisory Committee. This is the first painting that they bought from him.
