Saturday Afternoon

This painting shows Fernlea, the artist’s childhood home in Cookham-on-Thames, Berkshire. The figures are based on his family, their employees and their neighbours. Cookham was the centre of Spencer’s life and art. He lived there for most of his career and the village was the subject of much of his work.
