Schaffhausen on the Rhine

WAG 737

Information

This is a view of Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland. Stanfield toured Switzerland in both 1824 and 1838. The watercolour is may come from the first tour, as it was engraved by JT Willmore for publication in Heath's Picturesque Annual in 1832. It is thought that a friend of Stanfield, David Roberts (1794-1864), painted the exact same scene, possibly at the same time, from the same vantage point, although there is no mention of Roberts on a Swiss tour before the 1830s. There are a few minor differences, however: one of them being that there is only one figure on the bridge.
