Florence Irving was born in Longbyne, Thirlwall, Northumberland on the 12 April 1891. She became a District Nurse in Hayton, Northumberland and later worked as a midwife throughout England. She died on the 16 January 1974. The collection includes papers relating to Florence Irving's work as a Nurse and her war service. A scrapbook compiled by Florence relates to her service as a Nurse in the Volunteer Aid Detachment of the Red Cross during the First World War; includes details of the Britannic hospital ship, sunk on the 21 November 1916, on which Florence was a Nurse, and army hospitals in France.
