The Seven Legends: Self-Portrait

This self-portrait was inspired by the work of the Surrealists. Richards saw over 60 Surrealist works in an exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery in 1938. Richards imagines himself in a dream-like landscape with devils and demons. Around him seven strange incidents take place. The left half of this picture is darker than the right. We are not sure why. It may be because Richards originally painted another picture underneath.
