Sewing box

LL 2306

Information

This clam shaped sewing box is made from ivory and has a blue jasper plaque on the lid which has been decorated with white jasper sprigging. The decoration depicts dancing boys and the plaque is edged in gold. The box contains a sewing kit of thimble, a pair of scissors, a needle case and a bodkin. Each item sits within a neatly carved space in the ivory. Sewing was considered a necessary accomplishment for a young lady. Having a small sewing kit like this, which could be used when travelling, was very useful.
