Shabti of Bastet–iy–ti

Mummiform shabti wearing a tripartite wig with striations defined in the modelling. The wig is worn low on the forehead. Although badly damaged, it can be assumed that the divine beard would have been plaited. The arms are crossed right over left on the chest, and the hands emerge from a shroud to hold a pick in the left, and a hoe in the right. The right hand also holds the twisted rope for a basket although the latter is not indicated behind the left shoulder. The implements are fairly well defined in relief. The hoe has a twisted wiry tie. The face is oval in shape. The eyes are damaged but sufficient detail remains to show that cosmetic lines and brows were added in relief. The mouth is small, the lips quite thick. The shabti stands upon a trapezoidal base, and against a dorsal pillar. The body of the shabti has nine horizontal bands of incised inscription that names the owner as Bastet–iy–ti followed by Chapter 6 of the Book of the Dead. Bequest of Sir Rider Haggard, 1925.
