Sheet of Studies for 'May Morning on Magdalen Tower'

Hunt drew these studies on a visit to Oxford in 1888 to view the ceremony of greeting the sun from on top of Magdalen College Tower. It was a subject he had long wanted to paint. The finished painting is in the Lady Lever Art Gallery. Most of the studies relate to the views of Oxford rooftops and Botanical Gardens glimpsed through the gothic balustrade in the centre of the painting.
