This is Ford Madox Brown's study for 'Wycliffe reading his Translation of the Bible to John of Gaunt' which he painted 1847 - 1848. The finished painting reveals both Brown's interest in early English literature and the influence on his style of Holbein and the Italian masters who he had seen for the first time on his journey to Rome in 1845 -1846.
