Ford Madox Brown's study for 'Wycliffe reading his Translation of the Bible to John of Gaunt' painted 1847-1848. The finished painting revealed both Browns interest at this time in early English Literature following the Houses of Parliament fresco competitions, and the influence on his style of Holbein and the Italian masters seen by him for the first time on his journey to Rome in 1845-1846.
