Information

Ships log of the barque Jane of Liverpool on a voyage Liverpool - South Pacific and return 28 Sep 1836-13 Dec 1837. Written by 13 year old apprentice George Haram on his first voyage, very detailed. George Haram kept a diary at the age of thirteen when he became apprenticed to John Strancham on the barque Jane of Liverpool in 1836. For nine months the Jane traded along the coasts of Chile and Peru and his diary records details of the weather and sail settings, incidents on board, ships sighted, cargoes, passengers and ports of call. At the front of the journal are listed the contents of his chest, which are noted as identical to those of his grandfather during his apprenticeship. The journal ends in December 1837 en route from Callao to Liverpool.
