Shrine Figure

This apparently ancient figure, covered in sacrificial matter, is tentatively attributed to the Tellem, who are thought to have occupied the rocky Bandiagara Escarpment in Mali between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries. The upraised arms of the figure may represent a gesture of penitence or prayer.
