Shrine Figure

Horses and riders are widely associated with powerful and wealthy people in West Africa. The horseman is a fairly common theme in Dogon sculpture. This one is covered in sacrificial material and may have been removed from a shrine devoted to an ancestor who was a hogon or ‘priest’. A hogon was traditionally the most powerful person in a Dogon community.
