By the Side of the Bog of Allan
The Bog of Allen is a large raised bog in the centre of Ireland between the River Liffey and the River Shannon. Hartland was self-taught and worked as a scene painter for a theatre in Cork. He exhibited landscapes, principally in watercolour at the Royal Academy from 1869 to 1889 and at the Royal Society of British Artists from 1868 to 1889. He returned to Ireland several times, where he painted decorations for the Theatre Royal, Dublin. He had moved to Liverpool by 1871 and exhibited at the Liverpool Autumn Exhibition from 1872 until 1980. He was a member of the Liverpool Academy and the Liverpool Society of Painters in Watercolours.
