Sir Walter Scott

LL 710

Information

In 1820, sculptor Francis Legatt Chantrey (1781 - 1842) asked Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832) to sit for him. Scott was a Scottish poet and writer whose books - including the popular 'Ivanhoe' - were published around the world. The resulting marble bust, finished in 1821, was later given to Scott by Chantrey. Numerous copies, varying in quality, are known of this much admired work. As soon as Lever bought this copy, he placed it in the entrance hall of his Scottish home, Lews Castle, Stornoway.
