Skirt

Information
A skirt (piupiu) made from New Zealand Flax with a fringe of partly stripped and dyed cylindrical leaf strips dyed yellow, green, red and purple. The lower parts of the unstripped sections have an incised zigzag pattern.
There is no backing section to the fringe, which is plaited into a waistband in a double plait. There is a cloth strip at one end of the waistband.
The technique used is single-pair twining, with two lines of twining near the waist. The plait at the waist edge looks as if the lower one was made first with half a strand, then it was bent around at the end of the row and a second plait made with the remaining strands above the first plait. There are 2-3 strands per cm.
