Slate and wax tablet
LL 1393
Information
A copy of an ancient relief in the Capitoline Museum,in Rome, ordered by Wedgwood from the artist Guiseppe Angelini (1742-1811). The figures are modelled in red-brown wax on slate. The design is of the twelve Olympian Gods. The figures in the original relief, in the Capitoline Museum, were wearing less clothing. Wedgwood had more drapery applied so that, once the design was translated onto pottery, it did not offend his customers.
