Lid from a pottery slipper-style coffin. Wig, beard and painted zig-zag pattern. Cracked across the lower left corner and mended together.
Wellcome Historical Medical Museum no. 8380: Portion of Egyptian sarcophagus. 23¾ X 15¼ wide. Acquired at Steven's Auction House, London, 25 January 1921 lot 410 "Three portions of Egyptian sarcophagus covers".
Compare with other examples in Egypt Centre, Swansea University, that are ex Wellcome collection and note that they were acquired at the 1913 Rustafjaell sale, lot 436 (Swansea Egypt Centre numbers W486-9).
CONDITION NOTE 1998: Incomplete, previous repairs, chipped, pitted, worn, some loose fragnents,some black surface residue. Conserved 2007 for display.
