Jones trained at the Liverpool School of Art under the Scottish landscape painter John Finnie (1829 - 1907). He settled in Tal-y-Bont, Conway Valley, Gwynedd, North Wales, and exhibited at the Royal Cambrian Academy, where he was elected a member in 1885. He was also elected a member of the Liverpool Academy of Arts in 1901. Jones exhibited extensively at the Liverpool Autumn Exhibitions between 1881 and 1912 and at various other institutions including the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour.
