The Soldier's Departure

'The Solider's Departure' and 'The Solider's Return' (LL 3673 and LL 3674) are small, rather broadly-handled canvases and were probably commissioned from Morland by an engraver. They may have been commissioned to market a popular theatrical work at the time, as with Singleton's 'Flora' (LL 3680). Traditionally, they have been identified as the works engraved as 'The Soldier's Farewell' and 'The Soldier's Return' by G Graham and published in 1790, but Graham's prints derive from different compositions.
