St James's Palace and Pall Mall

LL 3564

Information

This painting shows Pall Mall, London as it was before the series of imposing men's clubs were built on it in the first half of the 19th century. The view is eastwards. At the far end is the spire of the church of St Martin-in-the-Fields, rebuilt by James Gibbs in 1722 - 1726. To the right is the main gatehouse of St James's Palace, built for Henry VIII in 1532 - 1540. In the foreground, the Changing of the Guard is being witnessed by groups of onlookers. Lever acquired the work and its companion, 'Queen Square, Bloomsbury' (later sold), as being by 'Hayes'. This artist is unidentified, and the name is probably a misprint for Dayes and intended to mean the topographical watercolourist Edward Dayes (1763 - 1804). Dayes, however, cannot have been responsible for this work as the architectural features date it to about 1750, and Dayes was born in 1763.
