The drawing is a good quality copy of the head of St. Peter in Sarto's Madonna with Saints, formerly in the Kaiser Friedrich Museum, Berlin. The altarpiece, dated 1528, was painted for the Church of San Domenico, Sarzana. The head of this drawing is at a slightly different angle to that in the picture.
