Jopling studied art as an amateur and was elected Associate of the Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1859. In 1871 he was elected an Honorary Member of the Liverpool Society of Painters in Watercolour. He exhibited at the RA, the Liverpool Academy and the Liverpool Autumn Exhibition.
