Statue on a Pedestal and Column Supporting a Horse

WAG 5102

Information

Formerly attributed to Inigo Jones (1573 - 1652), probably by collector David Pennant (1774/5 - 1841) who presented it to the Liverpool Royal Institution before his death in 1841. However this attribution was rejected by John Harris (born 1931), former Curator at the Royal Institute of British Architects. The Statue is probably intended to represent Apollo; the bow in his hand and the snake on the pedestal are among his attributes. It may be a design for a garden ornament (see also WAG 5103).
