One of seven topographical watercolours of continental views that are particularly small and framed together. 'Strasbourg' is a copy by an unknown artist from a steel engraving by J Carter after Stanfield's original for Charles Heath's 'Picturesque Annual for 1833, Travelling sketches on the Rhine and in Belgium and Holland'.

Stanfield painted the original watercolour in reverse, with the spire above the right-hand tower. It was engraved in its correct position above the left tower. The spire was 142 metres high and made the cathedral the tallest building in the world at the time.
