Information

This is a drawing for the heads of Jesus Christ and his mother Mary. It is a study for the painting 'The Finding of the Saviour in the Temple', now in Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. Most of this was painted in Jerusalem using local models, but Jesus and Mary were done in London, from British models. Jesus looks dreamily towards the viewer, a reference to his future role, whereas the sweet expression of his mother shows her happiness at finding her son after thinking he was lost. There is a small version of the painting at Sudley House in Mossley Hill, Liverpool, part of National Museums Liverpool.
