Study for Mrs Mounter

WAG 1248

Information

This is a preliminary drawing for an oil painting entitled 'Mrs. Mounter' also in the Walker Art Gallery collection (WAG 3135). Mrs Mounter was Gilman's housekeeper when he lived at 47 Maple Street and was the subject of several of his paintings. Here she is sitting at a breakfast table, looking towards the viewer. Most of the drawing's shading is achieved through hatching, while the face is heavily stippled. This sketch was exhibited at the Harold Gilman (1876 - 1919) Art Council of Great Britain exhibition in 1981.
