Tablet

This tablet depicts the marriage of Cupid and Psyche. It is a design copied from an ancient cameo, which was known as the Marlborough Gem This small gem was very famous in the eighteenth century. Wedgwood had to employ a sculptor to enlarge the design from the small gem, so that it was big enough to use on pottery. It is thought that John Flaxman (1755-1826) was the sculptor.
