This tablet, showing the classical Roman figure of Peace imploring Mars not to open the Gates to the Temple of Janus (a symbol of warfare). It was made to celebrate the Anglo-French commerce treaty of 1786. Another tablet, depicting Mercury uniting the hands of Britain and France, was also modelled to form a pair with this tablet. The modeller was the sculptor John Flaxman ( 1755-1826).
