This watercolour is one of seven topographical continental views that are particularly small and framed together in the Lady Lever collection. This watercolour was probably copied by an unknown artist from an engraving by James Baylis Allen (1803 - 1876) after Samuel Prout's (1783 - 1852) original for Robert Jenning's 1831 'Landscape Annual -  The Tourist in Italy'. Most of the elements in the 'Landscape Annual' print have been included apart from two small figures in the middle ground.

The image is set in the classical ruins of the Forum in Rome. The building in the foreground is now better known as the Basilica of Constantine. The distant belfry is that of the church Santa Francesco Romana. Prout's original drawing for this subject is in the British Museum's collection in London.
