Information

This is one of a group of drawings by British artist and book illustrator Edward Francis Burney, depicting scenes from Greek and Roman history and mythology. Serapis was a Greek-Egyptian god. There was a temple dedicated to him in Alexandria, Egypt, which was destroyed by Christians in 391. Little remains of the temple, but there is still an underground chamber which visitors can enter.
