The Thames from Richmond Terrace

WAG 8152

Information

This watercolour was painted around ten years after 'Richmond Hill' (LL 3773) in the collection of the Lady Lever Art Gallery, but from lower down the hill. This is another watercolour made for 'Picturesque Views in England and Wales'. Like other works in the series it offers a snapshot of early 19th-century Britain. In this image an assorted group of people are gathered on the terrace. Among them are a wealthy family from the new middle class with their coachman. This image, and 'Dudley' (LL 3923), from the same series and in the collection of the Lady Lever Art Gallery, contrast two separate but related scenes of life during industrialisation.
