Tongue Cover-Plate

M11472d

Information

During the Roman Period two eye amulets and a tongue amulet of gold leaf were placed on the mummy so that they could see and speak again in the Afterlife. This gold foil cover-plate would have been made to place on the tongue of a mummified body. Compare with Petrie, 'Tanis II' (London, 1888), p. 24, pl. VIII, 12 & 17.
