Torso of a Satyr

Torso of a satyr identified for the remains of the beard on the chest and his pubic hair with a vertical line rising almost onto his navel. His left arm would have been raised as it appears from the movement of the left arm, his right one was lowered and his head would have been turned to the left. It is difficult to reconstruct the pose of the lower limps but they may have been represented in a steady pose with only the slight inclination of the hips. There is breakage in the area of the buttocks and Ashmole believed that there may have been an attachment there with another figure possibly a Bacchus. However it is typical of Satyr to be supported by the bigger god rather than the other way around and there is also no traces of the intertwinned legs as it is common in such groups. The breakage may have been from a tree trunk that may have been used to add to the rustic character of the Satyr. Copy of an original of about the fourth century BC.
