Information

Totem pole made (on site) for the Liverpool International Garden Festival by Kwakwaka'wakw master carver Richard Hunt. It portrays a series of Richard's family crests and his own face at the top. Emerging between the ears of the main bear figure is a self-portrait of the artist. Below it the bear holds a killer whale in its claws. Within the killer whale's blowhole is Dzunuḵwa - Wild Woman of the Woods - a mythical female giant. Below the killer whale's tail is Pugwis - Man of the Sea - who, like Dzunuḵwa, is the bringer of wealth.
