Toy lion Fido

MMM.1995.4.1

Information

Nancy Mildon was given this toy lion by her mother. She named him Fido as she thought he was a dog! In July 1916, Fido comforted Nancy, aged 7, during a wartime crossing on board Cunard’s Alaunia. Nancy was upset when her mother lent Fido to fellow passenger, Ruth Merington, during the voyage. In gratitude, Ruth drew an illustration of Fido (MMM.1995.4.3) and wrote a poem (MMM.1995.4.2) which Nancy treasured for many years.
