Information

Lantern slide of an engraving showing the screw sloop-of-war USS Kearsarge engaging in canon fire with the Confederate commerce raider CSS Alabama during the Battle of Cherbourg (1864). During the battle the Alabama was sunk with 40 Confederate casualties. Captain Raphael Semmes and several of his surviving crew were picked up by the British yacht Deerhound. Instead of delivering the captives to Kearsage, Deerhound sailed for Southampton, allowing Semmes to escape and avoid imprisonment.
