Valley of the Durance

WAG 2154

Information

The Durance is a major river in South Eastern France, passing through the Hautes-Alpes and Provence until it meets the Rhone at Avignon. Cecil Hunt travelled extensively and widely, drawing as he went. In this work he combines watercolour and bodycolour to striking effect. He has worked into the watercolour using both pencil and scratching to add textural interest. This method of working combines to create luminous and atmospheric shadows, particularly in the mountain ridges to the left of the picture.
