For this vase Wedgwood did not copy ancient sculptures in Italy he copied a design by Stefano della Bella (1610-1664)  from 1646. The swirling marbled slip in creams and browns is used to imitate the appearance of the stone, agate. The gilded parts are imitating metal mounts.
