The view has been identified as of the church of Santa Maria Maddalena. Signed and dated 1840, this work is the earliest of the six Venetian views by Holland in the Lady Lever Art Gallery. The group illustrates Lever's habit of acquiring numerous works of the same type by one artist - perhaps a way of minimis ing the risk element in his picture buying.
