Venus

LL 176

Information

Bartolini was the leading Italian neo-classical sculptor of his generation, after Canova. He based 'Venus' on the famous painting, 'Venus of Urbino' of 1538 by Titian, which his friend JAD Ingres copied for him from the original in the Uffizi at Florence. The best version of this sculpture is now at Montpellier in France. This copy came from the soapmakers A and F Pears Ltd who may have used it to publicise their product or to decorate their offices.
