Pottery funnel necked pot. John Garstang’s excavations at Meroe in Sudan were mostly focused on the city and its surrounding structures. His team also cleared groups of tombs in nearby cemeteries and found large quantities of handmade beer jars like this one. This jar is marked by the impression of a mat or textile pressed against the wet clay before firing.
