Peter Lawson, his wife Mary and their three young children, Willie, Alick and Katie, left Liverpool on 25 October aboard the Etruria, Cunard, bound for New York. In his voyage diary he gives a vivid account of shipboard life during what proved to be an enjoyable voyage. It was his intention to make a home for his family in Chicago for a number of years, continuing to work for his employer, believed to be Thomas Lipton. However, after a mere six months the Lawson family were undertaking the return journey from New York to Liverpool, a result of the high cost of living compared to salary which they encountered in Chicago. This diary includes entries for the return voyage.
