Voyage journal of Joseph Gartside on a trip to Pennsylvania, USA

Small, leather covered notebook completed by Joseph Gartside, businessman from Rochdale. Travelling from Liverpool to Philadelphia USA on the ship City of Glasgow, leaving on April 18th 1853 arriving Philadelphia on May 7th. In his diary, written daily, he describes the journey, miles covered and visiting his brothers and their families. Full descriptions of the cities and places visited including Pittsburg. 11th June sails on City of Manchester from Philadelphia to Liverpool, arriving 27 June. Tintype photograph of man, woman and boy. Presumably Mr and Mrs Gartside? Dated around 1860-1870. A typed transcript of the diary is available.
