Walton Village

WAG 977

Information

This watercolour was selected for the 'Recording Merseyside' exhibition at the Bluecoat Chambers, Liverpool; an exhibition that recorded areas of Merseyside after the Second World War. Gill was influenced by Neo-Romanticism in the 1940s, which can be seen in this work. This ordinary terraced street is made sombre and somewhat eerie by the tombstones and gnarled trees which frame it. The view is taken from the churchyard of St Mary's, Walton, looking south-east. Eric Peter Gill should not be confused with the sculptor, Eric Gill (1882 - 1940).
